The Diabetes UK Great North Walk is returning to Herrington Country Park in Sunderland for the third year.



The route will feature a truly lovely 10-mile walk starting and finishing in the park itself. The former colliery site has been transformed into a wonderful country park with thousands of mature and specially planted trees.



There’s plenty to see as the route takes in tradition, culture and fantastic scenery. Walkers will be able to get up close to the iconic Penshaw Monument and wander the banks of the River Wear before returning to Herrington Country Park which includes 40 hectares of new woodland, 10km of footpaths, 5km of bridleways and a series of eight lakes running through the centre of the park, not forgetting the fantastic children’s play area.



There will again be a shorter route over a distance of approximately 3 miles, on a superb tarmac route contained within the park itself, which is suitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs and those with smaller children who may not be able to manage the full 10 miles.



It all adds up to a totally unique event that is ideal for all the family. In fact, the Great North Walk is a great social occasion for the serious and not so serious walker. Many hundreds are expected to use it as the perfect excuse for getting their walking shoes on as part of a fitness drive.



Limited edition event T-shirts will be sent out prior to the event, as many walkers like to wear them on the day, and those who finish the event will receive a Great Walk finisher’s pack, which will include a medal, Powerade Sports drink, Aqua Pura water, space blanket and other great products.
